Chiropractic Adjustments During Pregnancy
Chiropractic care during pregnancy offers a range of benefits to both the mother and child.
Proper Spinal Alignment. Ensuring the spinal bones are properly aligned leaves more space in the area of the uterus so that the baby can grow properly.
Reduced Back Pain. Chiropractic adjustments and exercises during pregnancy can also create enhanced support for the lower back. The ligaments that run between the uterus, lower spine (sacrum) and pelvis can become tight and painful in some women during pregnancy. Getting the spine back into proper alignment shifts the uterus into an ideal healthy position for both mother and baby.
Improved Nerve Communication. Improperly aligned vertebrae can also block nerve communication between the reproductive organs, brain and other parts of the body. Restoring alignment can restore nerve communication and facilitate better overall function.
A Healthier Baby. Constraint while in utero can cause trauma to an infant’s spine. Constraint is often a result of in-utero tightness due to misalignment of the mother's sacrum and pelvis, which pulls the ligaments unevenly. Chiropractic adjustments and exercises can help alleviate these issues and possible impediments to the baby’s optimal health.
Decreased Labor Time. Women who receive chiropractic treatments during pregnancy tend to have labor times up to 45 percent shorter than those who don't receive chiropractic care.
Pediatric Chiropractic Care for Childhood Conditions
Infants and children undergo a range of stressors to their spine in the first years of life. Chiropractic adjustments and exercises can help the following childhood conditions and stressors:
In-Utero Constraint. If a child was in a less than ideal position within their mother during pregnancy, their spinal development can be affected for years to come. Chiropractic adjustments for children can make a big difference in correcting these issues early.
Birth Issues. The natural birth process itself can in some cases affect the new baby’s spine. If tools like forceps or a vacuum are used, there could be additional spinal issues.
Daily Stressors. If a baby’s diaper has been changed with their legs held high, this can contribute to spinal problems. Time spent in a jumper, walker, or car seat can also affect the health of a young child’s spine.
Learning to Walk. As a child learns to walk, he or she inevitably has a few falls before mastering it. Any fall can potentially jolt the spine in a way that causes chronic issues going forward.
Exploring the World. As kids get older, they get more adventurous and rough on their own bodies. Climbing, jumping, roughhousing, learning to ride a bicycle and playing sports can all lead to activities that can impede optimal spinal development.
Spine-related issues in childhood can cause neck and back pain and stiffness. These symptoms can lead to childhood conditions such as colic, ear infections, constipation, decreased immune capabilities, bed wetting, and even learning disorders.
An infant’s spine is largely comprised of cartilage and does not develop fully into bone until early adulthood. Chiropractic care in these early years can help to ensure proper spinal development from childhood on.
